Keller Williams & His Compadres poster

I had the pleasure of designing this official poster for Keller Williams & His Compadres. It's a two night event and tonight Keller is joined by Michael Kane and Michael Travis of String Cheese and tomorrow he'll be joined by Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon.

The poster is a 24 x 18" screen print that will be available on Monday at 12pm here. The regular edition will be $20 and I have a very limited number of green variants available for $30.

Obviously these would not arrive in time for Christmas so if purchased as a gift, I'd be happy to send a special email to the recipient on Christmas Day. Just send me a note at checkout.

Truffle Shuffle!!!

Truffle Shuffle
36" x 4" x 20"
mixed media
There are very few scenes in the history of cinema as classic (and reminiscent of my childhood) as the "truffle shuffle". Like any other kid in the 80s I was obsessed with The Goonies. The idea that an ancient treasure themed adventure could be initiated with Dad's crap in the attic was fascinating. Aside from the journey, every character was unique and relatable. From Mikey to Chunk to Data to Mouth...I was a little bit of all of them. The film has so many memorable quotes and moments but none come close to Chunk earning his way into the house via truffle shuffle. Forcing the fat kid to humiliate himself for acceptance is funny enough but isn't entirely the point. The shuffle itself is monumental. It's hysterical. It's also simultaneously mean spirited and innocent...which is a rare and lovely contradiction.

I don't know what else to say other than this is a film that will always stick with me. It's sort of my generation's Wizard of Oz. The truffle shuffle is the pinnacle and most memorable moment of the film for me. I've had this particular sculpture in mind for a few years now and I finally had the time to execute it.

Truffle Shuffle is 36" x 4" x 20"and made of foam, wood and acrylics. It is currently available at Gallery 1988.

It's a Petey Party!!

Since moving to the greater Cincinnati area 6 years ago I have mixed emotions about the Cincinnati Reds...mainly because they seem to dominate my team every time they come to town! That said I'm a HUUUGE baseball fan and I cherish the history of the game like nothing else. I watch the Ken Burns 12 disc documentary at least twice a year. Regardless of team loyalty I think any fan would admit that Pete Rose (the player) embodied everything that is so great about the game. I wish every player on my team had 1/10th of his effort, determination and intestinal fortitude. He was minimally talented and became one of the all time greatest. Hell I could even care less that he bet on baseball and it's a travesty that he's STILL not in the Hall.

Anyway, being influenced by my region I figured Pete was the perfect subject of a few creations. The first is a mixed media statue that's 17" tall and is available here.
The second is also mixed media but is just the head and is overall 9". It's available here.

Mr. Show poster (2nd edition)

After receiving several inquiries and requests for another run of Mr. Show posters I finally decided to oblige. Originally designed for G1988's Is This Thing On 2, all 75 posters sold out rather quickly. My affinity for the show as well as the design inspired me to put more out into the universe. It's an 18x24", 5 color screen print that's an edition of 75. All posters are signed, numbered and appropriately labeled "second edition." They're available for $40 here.

Widespread Panic Cincinnati Poster

6 color screen print
edition of 220
I was once again asked to contribute a poster for a Widespread Panic show. Oddly enough, despite designing posters for about 5 years, this was my first one for a local show. It depicts a carny putting out the "badass" vibe while sipping on a tall boy. There's a few easter eggs in there such as the flying pigs (a Cincy icon), a dude sporting a Reds shirt, and a few Panic song references in the carny's tats. The overall design loosely references "Sharon,", a song Panic covers that mentions a carnival worker attracting people to a seductive performance inside a tent.

This poster is a limited edition of 220, though I have a small number of Artist Proofs available here.
There's also a VERY limited number of green variants available here. And I also have the original 24x18" ink drawing available for $250 here.  All posters have sold out.

And some detail pics...

Dexter Statue Available!

I wanted to try something new and produce (sort of) my own line of toys/statues. I have several characters in mind and a few already in production. The first one I've had time to finish is Dexter. It's a one of a kind, hand crafted, 16" tall and 5" wide mixed media statue.

Dexter seemed like an appropriate first release considering we're down to the final week of his existence. I fell in love with this show the moment I discovered it. It was after season 4 aired so (thanks to Netflix) I had the chance to rock the first 4 seasons in immediate fashion. I've had Showtime ever since. Ive said it before but I LOVE when a show, book or film makes you root for a heavily flawed character! There's something positively novel about that. Tony Soprano, Hannibal Lecter, & Tony Montana are a few other examples that immediately come to mind. Regardless, the show is brilliant, the writing is brilliant, and I'm sad to see Dexter go. Hopefully they'll wrap it up in a deserving anti-Soprano fashion. Man, that ending scarred me!

So in the spirit of the series finale I present to you...Dexter...available here.

Wedding Invitation

I was recently given the task of designing the wedding invitations for my good friends Kaycee and Zach. They requested the American Gothic reference and this is what I came up with.

Shaun of the Dead

Shaun of the Dead
mixed media
15" x11" x38"
Given the opportunity to participate in Gallery 1988's tribute to writer/director Edgar Wright, I decided to create something inspired by Shaun of the Dead. Wright is responsible for Shaun as well as Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, the about-to-open The World's End, etc. Being a big fan of Wright's style I wanted to participate and despite being the easy rout, I chose to focus on Shaun of the Dead. I also wanted to take the opportunity to experiment with scale as well as steer away (a little) from the sort of 2D/3D relief work I've been doing recently. Shaun stands in at just over 3 feet tall and is 15 inches wide. He consists primarily of wood, foam and acrylics.

It is available here.

Folks Festival logo

I recently had the honor of designing the logo for the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, which takes place tomorrow through Sunday in Lyons, Colorado. John Prine, Loreena McKennitt, and the John Butler Trio are just a few of the artists performing. The venue is absolutely gorgeous and I imagine this unique festival is going to be a lot of fun.

The Beatles: Rubber Soul 3D Album Cover

Rubber Soul
mixed media
The Beatles. Rubber Soul. What can I say? I guess I'll start with stating that my love for the Beatles is one of the many great things I inherited from my father. He gave me my artistic interest, my twisted sensibilities, and the ability to grow a beard as bad as Michael Jackson. I know everyone's dad loves The Beatles but mine has always (and to this day) COVERED his house in Beatles memorabilia. It's simply a way of life in the Shock household.  I'm certain he's currently wearing Beatles underwear...from 1963...not mint condition!

Over time I've come to appreciate some of the early stuff but as far as I'm concerned, they didn't become The Beatles until Rubber Soul. Among other things, John, Paul, George, and what's his name are shining examples of how to artistically develop. They started with the "please buy this record, girl" approach and established success, credentials, and therefore money and power. They didn't take their success and regurgitate the blue print which Im sure they were pressured to do. Instead they did it THEIR WAY. For some reason this is still extremely rare. They sold out at first and then musically progressed. They're the anti-Metallica if you will. Ok Im ranting...the point is their work drastically changed direction with this album in 1965. The sophistication in song writing as well as musical advancements and harmonic brilliance started a run of albums that shall never be paralleled in musical genius.

I was asked to contribute to Bottleneck Gallery's Where's My Mind ? exhibit: a study in all things mind blowing. The beauty of a Bottleneck show is the room for interpretation. Some interpreted that as anything psychedelic or M. Night Shyamalan-y. Though this album is not that, it was a bold move and the result was it changed music forever. Considering the music being produced at the time, Rubber Soul was (and still is) mind blowing!

This is a 19x19" mixed media sculpture that will officially become available on Thursday, July 11th. Bottleneck will have an online preview Thursday (8-9pm EST), the show opens in Brooklyn on Friday, and if it's still around it'll be available online Saturday at noon (EST).
