RIP Jose Fernandez

I have to admit that the death of Jose Fernandez has hit me harder than any other celebrity passing. As a huge Marlins fan I've dedicated a lot of my life to following this club. I know it sounds silly but when you dedicate that much, the players (although complete strangers) almost feel like family. We go through many ups and downs and it seems like we experience that together. Jose was a unique personality that always exhibited enthusiasm for the game and life...on days he pitched and days he didn't. It really was, as manager Don Mattingly said, like watching a kid playing in Little League. It was refreshing and an absolute treat. He was one of the best pitchers in baseball at the age of 24 and no doubt would have become better. This kid simply had the world in the palm of his hands.

The fact that he has his first child on the way and broke that news 6 days before his death makes it even harder to swallow. The fact that he was originally slated to start yesterday's game and likely wouldn't have been out that late if they hadn't moved his start to tonight makes it even harder to swallow. The fact that he meant so much to the entire community of Cuban Americans makes it even harder to swallow. I can't imagine how emotional tonight's game will be but I have to go through it as a sort of celebration. I also had to create this drawing as a sort of celebration.

Jose Fernandez was a bright shining light and I'm glad I got to enjoy some of it from a distance. Rest in peace, young man.

The Dude of the Year: AfFOILdables screen print

The next release in my AfFOILdables poster series (which focuses on modestly priced screen prints on foil paper) is The Big Lebowski inspired print entitled "The Dude of the Year". I've always loved that brief moment when the Dude sees himself in the Time Magazine mirror just before meeting Jeffrey Lebowski. It seemed like a perfect opportunity to once again design something that specifically considers the holographic properties of foil paper. This print is an 11x14", 5 color, limited edition screen print on rainbow foil paper...available for only $30! There's also a very small number of lava foil variants. Both available here.

The Avett Brothers Red Rocks

I've just released my prints from The Avett Brothers' three night run at Red Rocks, which took place this past weekend. They're limited edition 5 color screen prints that are available as both a 3 piece 12x24" set and as 1 uncut 24x36" print. There are regular editions, foils and wood veneers...all available here.

And here's a little about the design...

I was very interested in exploring the fascinating and very different songs and sounds of their new album True Sadness. I found it to be a remarkable collection that in many ways is more complex and experimental than previous albums, yet is still grounded by the very core organic sound that is pure Avett. I wanted to simplistically depict the three original members representing that core organic sound. I chose to portray them in a stretched out distorted manner that suggests just how different this album is. Basically it's the intended juxtaposition of simplistic and unique, combined with the beauty of the live experience as well as this distinguished venue.

Flight of the Conchords NYC Poster

I had the distinct honor of designing the official Flight of the Conchords gig poster for their show last night in New York City. Twas a real treat religiously watching both seasons and listening to the albums while working on it. These guys are geniuses. My edition of prints will be on sale this Friday at 2pm EDT here.

311 Chicago

I had the honor of designing the 311 poster for their show this past Friday in Chicago. Inspired by the Chicago River and the tune "Sand Dollars", it's an 18x24", 6 color screen print with a glitter overlay...printed by the magnificent peeps at VG Kids. My edition (plus lava foils, rainbow foils, sparkle foils, and prints on wood veneer) are now officially available here.

Bar Swine foil prints

Allow me to introduce the second installment of the AfFOILdables poster series, which focuses on affordable foil prints. Entitled "Bar Swine", it's a limited edition, 5 color, 24x18" screen print on rainbow and sparkle foil paper.

This design was used for a previous gig poster and since it was so well received, I decided to update it a little and tailor it specifically for holographic foil qualities. I did discreetly pay tribute to the original poster/band with the dice. Anyway, these were printed by the loverly folks at VGKids and they look fantastic if I do say so myself! Available here.

Dopapod Diptych

May I present to ye my Dopapod diptych for their shows tonight and tomorrow night in Philadelphia. I collectively call them the "cosmic conductor". Each poster forms one body of art that, not to get too philosophical, deals with my belief that music (and the arts in general) is likely this planet's greatest contribution to the universe. There's a central theme to discovering the "key" to this knowledge while other cultures and planets observe. Plus it subtly deals with the dualities of heaven & hell, right & wrong, etc. Also, Dopapod's music is very exploratory and visual to me so there are some lyrical inspiration as well.

I'll have my copies (cut and uncut) plus 2 types of foils (cut and uncut) available on Monday at 2pm EDT here.

Avett Brothers New York Prints

Allow me to present my Avett Brothers print for their show tonight at Madison Square Garden in New York City. This one is quite unique in that (instead of the usual screen print) it's a very high quality giclee print. Printed with archival inks on museum cotton rag paper, photos simply cannot do it justice! It's 18x24" and designed to resemble a vintage early 80's basketball poster.

When hired for this gig, being my very first Madison Square Garden poster, my brain immediately went to basketball. MSG, often referred to as the Mecca of Basketball, has had so many monumental moments that it only seemed fitting. I'm admittedly a huge Knicks fan and it's a subtle tribute to the days where I wasn't quasi-ashamed to admit it. I was more importantly thinking, though, about the old promo college basketball posters you'd see hanging in bedrooms, basements, garages, etc. Growing up in Kentucky, UK and UofL posters like that were (and still are) everywhere. The poses were ridiculously cheesy and so 80's. I thought it would be great to see the band in such an environment. They're not messing around as these are some serious game faces...with feathered hair....and mullets...and glasses straps...and striped knee high socks!

I'd also like to give a ton of credit, respect, and sincere thanks to the band and their management. One of the benefits of giclee over the usual screen print is the ability to print an endless amount of colors as well as more photorealistic gradients. These elements were necessary to pull of the look of an authentic 80's poster. The downside of giclees of this quality is the cost of production is considerably higher than the typical screen print. A lot of bands would never entertain the possibility of going this route as the profit margin is minimal. These guys put the art first and that's simply rare in this business. It's basically what every artist hopes for from a client, but it's certainly understandable why it's so rare. Even with them raising the price on these prints, the profit barely covers the overhead. Again, I like to give a huge thanks to these guys and make sure everyone is aware of their dedication to their fans!

I'll have my own copies to sell, as well as a few interesting variants, available on Monday at 2pm EDT here.

Screen prints on holographic foil paper can be astonishingly beautiful if designed specifically to consider its properties. Unfortunately a lot of foil prints are variants and therefore may not necessarily translate to the medium. Also, the cost of paper, combined with the exclusivity (predominately being variants), has resulted in the market dictating some high costs. I therefore wanted to present a series of foil prints designed specifically for foil paper at an economical cost for the buyer. Certainly not every foil print I release will fall under the AfFOILdable name/concept, but I do intend to occasionally release prints for this series whenever I have time between commissions and other demanding projects. The first limited edition release will be available tomorrow with more info coming soon. Stay tuned!

Did you know that I be on the Instagrams @darinshock? I've had an account for a while but one of my resolutions is to dedicate more effort to it. I'll be posting behind the scenes, works in progress, and general content entirely exclusive to Instagram. If you're into all that, give me a follow....

Squirrel Master

I'm always fascinated with side characters in film that make a tremendous impact regardless of screen time. A few years ago I started a series paying tribute to these characters with "The Greatest Side Characters in Cinematic History". First it was Jesus Quintana, followed by Carl Spackler, and now I present to you....Squirrel Master!

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the cult classic Half Baked. Dave Chappelle is an all time hero of mine and this film is a prime example of his (and co-writer Neal Brennan's) genius. It's fantastically ridiculous that Tommy Chong plays the incarcerated heroic character that declares fragile Kenny to be his bitch and protect him from the feared Nasty Nate. It's even more utterly, fantastically ridiculous that this prison badass is not only apparently a martial artist, he's additionally a whisperer of squirrels. With his faithful companion Fuzzy Nuts, Squirrel Master is a true defender of all that's right as well as "Kenny's sweet, virgin ass"!

A tribute to this brilliant character, "Squirrel Master" is a 12x24", 4 color screen print that's a limited edition of 70. This print, plus 10 foils on lava, sparkle, and rainbow are now available here.
